Luxor at a glance

Luxor is one of the top travellers’ destinations in the south of Egypt and the Valley of the Nile. It was the capital of the dynasties of the Middle Kingdom as well as the New Kingdom of Egypt. As such, it is a virtual treasure trove of archaeological sites. This is an essential destination for anyone interested in history.

Luxor Holidays - Main Attractions
Although Luxor is not very large, it makes sense to divide the site into a number of ‘districts’, each with its own range of attractions.

Visit the East Bank
The East Bank – this is where the majority of hotels, restaurants and other tourist facilities are situated. It has for centuries been the main residential area of Luxor. Here you will also find two of the most fascinating sights in Luxor: the Temple of Luxor and the Temple of Karnak. The Luxor Museum and the Museum of Mummification are also situated in this part of town.

Visit the West Bank
The West Bank is an even bigger treasure trove of archaeological wonders than the East Bank. This is where you will find a whole array of Egyptian mortuary temples, the Tombs of the Nobles and the Workmen’s Village of Deir-el-Medineh. From here, it is also easy to access the Valley of the Queens, where the Tomb of Nefertiti and the Tomb of Amunhirkhepeshef are situated.

Visit the Valley of the Kings
The Valley of the Kings (also called Biban el-Moluk, the "Gates of the Kings") is where most of the Pharaohs of Egypt were buried. It is situated just behind the West Bank. Excavations continue to the present day on this vast archaeological site. The tombs have officially been given numbers: KV62 is the number given to the tomb of Tutankhamen.

Visit the Western Valley
The Western Valley also called Wadi al-Gurud (the "Valley of the Monkeys") is a pharaonic burial ground next to the Valley of the Kings that you can visit on your Luxor holidays. The name ‘Valley of the Monkeys’ was derived from the many paintings of baboons on the walls of the tombs.

Who Should Visit This Destination and Why
The majority of people on their Luxor holidays come here because they are interested not only in Egyptian history, but also in world history. The era of the Pharaohs was an important time in world history and the archaeological sites found here are some of the most remarkable in the world.

Although many independent tourists visit Luxor as well, the majority of visitors probably form part of an organised tour or they purchased a holiday package that includes a visit to Luxor. It is important to have a good guide when visiting the archaeological sites; otherwise, you might not properly appreciate the significance of what you are viewing.
