As the second largest town on the island of Rhodes in Greece, Ialyssos has a population of 12,000 and is located on the north western coast. Two notable figures were born in Ialyssos during the 5th Century BC: Timocreon, a poet, and Diagoras of Rhodes, a famous boxer. Until the mid-1980s, Ialyssos remained a small village with a population of around 2,500 people. However, between the mid-1980s and 2001 the population grew to over 10,000. During that time, the town developed into a major tourist attraction featuring several hotels along the coast.

Reasons to Visit
Due to its transformation into a resort-type town, Ialyssos features a modern infrastructure surrounded by historical sites, rich culture and folkloric tradition. The primary reason for Ialyssos holidays is the organized beaches that are suitable for water sports, especially wind and kite surfing. The town boasts of high standard hotels, modern conference centres, hospitable lodging, restaurants featuring international and traditional cuisine, and friendly locals.

Comparison to Other Local Resorts
Although providing many of the same tourist features as other local resorts, Ialyssos prides itself on being a water sport destination. Due to the location, wind and kite surfing are the best sports on the island, and major attractions for those taking holidays in Ialyssos. Also, the historical sites that can be found around the town differ from those in other Rhodes locations.

Primary Visitors
Although an attraction for visitors of all ages, Ialyssos is more geared toward the younger crowd because of the wind and kite surfing activity. It is the best on the Island of Rhodes and perhaps in the country of Greece. Wind and kite surf make up the primary tourist population that frequents Ialyssos.
