Fodele is located 27 kilometres west of the city of Heraklion ensuring a short ride from the airport to the village. The Fodele valley is extremely lush and green with many orange and lemon groves providing welcome shade in the hotter summer months. The village of Fodele retains a charming old part of traditional houses decorated with beautiful flowers. There are a number of craft shops selling souvenirs and local crafts.

Fodele holidays offer a mix of sun worshipping, art and history. The picturesque village of Fodele is situated inland and the nearest beach is three kilometres away. The beach is lovely and sandy. Fodele is famous for being the birthplace of the artist Domenico Theotocopoulos, more commonly known as El Greco. There is a museum dedicated to the Cretan painter in the village.

The village is considered by historians to be the site of the ancient city of Astali, the port of Axis.
