The town was named for a famous market that began in the 1300s, and that market is still held today. The highest mountain peak in Menorca, Monte Toro, rises above Es Mercadal and provides a dramatic backdrop to a very beautiful and less travelled destination. Should you choose to hire a car, it is convenient to drive to the larger cities. A drive up the mountain to Monte Toro is clearly marked, and offers visitors one of the most scenic drives to be found anywhere.

Accommodation at Es Mercadal holidays is limited, as it is not primarily considered a tourist location, but if you stay here you will find quaint villas and rooms to let, and it is off the beaten path if that is what you prefer. Many tourists that come to the island prefer the out of the way places as the major tourism areas can become quite crowded in the summer season.
