Canary Islands at a glance
The Canary Islands archipelago lies in the Atlantic Ocean and comprises seven islands – the Canary Islands holidays destinations of Tenerife, Lanzarote, El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. The islands are volcanic in origin and their strikingly diverse landscapes include giant sand dunes, mountains, sub-tropical flora and abundant pine woods.
Holiday Playgrounds and Water Sports
The best known destinations are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Tenerife is well-known for its exuberant nightlife, but it also has two UNESCO world heritage sites, 42 protected natural spaces and one national park. Gran Canaria is another destination that is popular with party-goers. The island boasts of an amazing variety of landscapes and microclimates, and its capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a dynamic and cosmopolitan city. Lanzarote has successfully combined modern resorts with low-rise aesthetically pleasing designs and eco-friendly development. Lanzarote offers a chance to visit its spectacular volcanic landscapes and peaceful white sandy beaches. Fuerteventura has long, unspoilt beaches of white sand and is a great destination for wind/water sports. Its beaches are considered to be some of the best in Europe.
Destinations for Walkers, Star-gazers and Divers
Of the less well-known destinations, La Gomera is an undeveloped, charming little island that is often visited by day-trippers from Tenerife, just 30 minutes away by ferry. Its green forests contain species of plants that have long disappeared from other parts of the world. The green and un-commercialised La Palma is arguably the most beautiful of the islands. Its skies are ideal for star gazing and its astrophysics observatory is the most important in the northern hemisphere. It is mainly visited by walkers. The most westerly of the islands is El Hierro, a windblown island and a bit off the beaten track. However, the island does attract some walkers and its transparent waters makes it a great destination for the divers.
Assorted Destinations
All the islands are connected by ferry and plane service. Flights take off throughout the day and journey times are less than an hour. Modern ferries also travel between the islands at frequent intervals, and Canary Islands is not restricted to one destination, but can include all the Canary Islands holiday destinations.
