It is said that Agios Nikolaos is all arty, leisurely and sleepy yet also bustling and that’s probably why Agios Nikolaos holidays are one of the most popular ways in which tourists can enjoy the Greek island of Crete. Agios Nikolaos is a coastal town east of Crete’s capital, Heraklion and it sits partially on the ruins of an ancient city called Lato pros Kamara. In fact this settlement is even older, first occupied by the Dorians in the Bronze Age.

Ancient town becomes big resort
Modern times brought on plenty of development and Agios Nikolaos is now a tourist hub for the twenty plus small villages and farms that make up the Lassithi. Attractions include the small lagoon of Lake Voulismeni as well as the many small beaches and the tiny island opposite the town, Agioi Pantes. Accommodation is varied and includes luxury villas, hotels and apartments.

Time to shop, talk and lounge
The town’s atmosphere varies depending on where you are with some cafés suited for lounging and talking and others playing loud music for those not particularly interested in talking. Shopping areas in the town offer tourists on holidays in Agios Nikolaos with the opportunity to look and buy items made by hand in the local area. Of course, as a coastal resort Agios Nikolaos offers visitors many beaches, some up to ten kilometres in length as well as a wonderful marina with capacity for more than 250 boats.
